Date: July 7, 2018
Event: Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix (Round 7 of 10)
Series: Prototype division of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship
Location: Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario (2.459-mile, 10-turn road course)
Result: 4th by Renger van der Zande (1:07.093 at 131.942 mph)
Pole Winner: Colin Braun of Core Autosport Oreca LMP2 (1:06.315 at 133.490 mph – track record)

The No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R will start Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix from the outside of the second row after IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship qualifying Saturday at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario.

Renger van der Zande, who with co-driver Jordan Taylor is looking for a repeat of the team’s 2015 win here, clocked a fast lap of 1 minute, 7.093 seconds at 131.942 mph around the 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course. It was good for fourth among the 32 car-and-driver combinations that will take the green flag for Sunday’s two-hour, 40-minute race.

“I’m pretty pleased with what we did in qualifying by the team and in terms of my driving,” said van der Zande, who recorded the team’s best qualifying effort since he qualified on the pole at the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona. “I think we improved a lot – a lot – from first practice to qualifying. The boys did a very, very good job there. On this track, you need a lot of front-end grip in the high-speed corners and a lot of rear-end grip in the low-speed corners, which is always a compromise. I think we played that very well. On top of that, I pushed really hard for a lap and I think all went well there. I’m happy to be fourth, starting this race on the second row makes me. Now, it will be a matter of staying out of trouble during the first stint tomorrow.”

Van der Zande was the fastest qualifying Cadillac DPi-V.R driver – the Nos. 5 and 31 Action Express Cadillac DPi-V.Rs scoring the 11th and 12th spots on the grid today – and was .7 of a second behind the track-record lap of polesitter Colin Braun in the No. 54 Core Autosport Oreca LMP2, who also was fastest at last week’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen in track-record time.

The top-five qualifiers for Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix are:

1. Core Autosport (No. 54 Oreca LMP2) Colin Braun and Jonathan Bennett (1:06.315 at 133.490 mph – track record)

2. Acura Team Penske (No. 6 Acura DPi) Dane Cameron and Juan Pablo Montoya (1:06.540 at 133.038 mph)

3. JDC-Miller Motorsports (No. 85 Oreca LMP2) Robert Alon and Simon Trummer (1:06.841 at 132.439 mph)
