2026 GTD at Indianapolis Post Race Report

Danny Formal, Trent Hindman, and the No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 team tackled the final sprint race of the season in Indianapolis, just down the road from the team’s headquarters in Brownsburg, IN. Formal started the the two-hour, 40-minute race from ninth position and ultimately finished in 13th position due to a pit lane incident that ended their day early.

The weekend kicked off in a dominant fashion with the team securing the fastest laps in both practice sessions. Unfortunately, qualifying for the GT categories was cancelled on Saturday afternoon due to weather, which saw the order being set by championship points with the No. 45 GTD team starting from ninth.

Despite the qualifying order, this would not deter the team from putting their best foot forward and showing Indianapolis Motor Speedway the pace they had leading up to the race. Formal took to the first stint focused on gaining position immediately, but an early on-track incident with prototypes saw a yellow flag that delayed their green flag start. As the field went green once again, Formal made skillfully executed moves forward, making it up to fourth in just 40-minutes of racing.

After battling through traffic for the latter portion of his stint, Formal made his way to pit lane about an hour into racing to hand the reins of the No. 45 Lamborghini GTD over to Hindman. A seamless driver change saw Hindman taking to the field in fourth with a fresh set of tires and a full tank of fuel. Hindman utilized the clean track to gain time on those GTD around him.

With around an hour to go, most of the GTD field coming into pit lane for a quick stop to see them through to the end of the race. During their routine pit stop and trying to take advantage of a full field pit sequence, the team experienced a fueling incident that ultimately ended their day on pit lane with thankfully all drivers and crew safe. The No. 45 Lamborghini GTD team tallied a 13th-place result.

“It’s very sad what happened to the GTD car with the no qualifying meaning we had to start at the back,” said team co-owner, Wayne Taylor. “We got up to fourth and we were just running cars down, then we unfortunately had a fire in the pits that put us out. The team did such a good job with a car that shouldn’t have even been where it was given where they started. Both Danny and Trent did an awesome job and I’m just sorry it ended the way it did. We have Petit Le Mans, so we will have the two of them back along with Graham for the long-distance race. The pressure’s gone, so now we can go enjoy ourselves.”

The No. 45 DEX Lamborghini GTD team will head next to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta to partake in the season finale for the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, MOTUL Petit Le Mans, on September 30- October 3, 2026.

Danny Formal, full season co-driver, No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2: “The Brickyard is over. An unfortunate ending to what looked like an incredible weekend. Trent going P1 in FP1, I was able to go P1 in FP2. The guys and girls at WTR gave us a fantastic racecar, and everyone has been working extremely hard. I’m sad about it, but happy with the pace we brought this weekend. I had a difficult stint, but we got through it and gave the car to Trent in a good position with him coming out of the pits in P4. Trent was doing a fantastic job saving some energy and catching the leaders, so we were going to have a shorter stop than everyone. An unfortunate event in the pit stop took us out of the race. Thankfully everyone is okay. Our main concern was our mechanics, and they are all perfect and ready to go for Petit. Grateful to be here, for WTR, and all the partners. I’m excited for Petit Le Mans to finish off the season.”

Trent Hindman, full season co-driver, No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2: “First and foremost, I’m happy that Dallas (fueler) and the rest of the crew guys are okay. Situations on pit lane can get pretty dicey pretty quick, and what’s most important is that everyone is okay. It’s definitely a shame because we had great speed all weekend, and we knew we had a good racecar. It’s unfortunate that it didn’t go our way, but in the end, we are very confident in the car we have for Road Atlanta. We are very much looking forward to sending off the Huracán off with a win – that’s the goal. Big thanks to everyone at Wayne Taylor Racing for continuing to push through adversity and keep the focus moving forward.”
