Event: Montreal 200 (Round 11 of 13)
Series: Daytona Prototype division of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series
Location: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal (2.71-mile, 15-turn road course)
Pole Winner: Jon Fogarty of Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing (1:33.135 at 104.713 mph)
SunTrust Racing: 4th by Max Angelelli (1:33.490 at 104.315 mph)
The No. 10 SunTrust Corvette Dallara DP of Wayne Taylor Racing will start Saturday’s GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series Montreal 200 from the outside of the second row after qualifying Friday afternoon at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Max Angelelli, who co-drives the SunTrust Racing Corvette DP with newly turned 23-year-old, turned a fast lap of 1 minute, 33.135 seconds (104.713 mph) around the 2.71-mile, 15-turn legendary home of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, good for fourth among 21 car-and-driver combinations that will take the green flag for Saturday’s prelude to the NASCAR Nationwide Series Napa 200.
“We continued our practice checklist into the qualifying session because this setup was scheduled to be tested yesterday during practice, but we couldn’t do it because of our brake problem that the guys had to fix right away,” said Angelelli, who is a two-time Montreal 200 winner, co-driving with Jan Magnussen to victory in 2007 and with Brian Frisselle in 2009. “So, we took a risk and sacrificed the qualifying session because we were not sure, yet, which configuration to use for the race. Now we know. We tested both, so we have a solid answer. All of that considered, we ended up fourth, which is really not bad. But you always want to be faster than everybody else in qualifying. The good thing is, we should be in great shape for the race.”
The SunTrust team got in just 10 laps of practice Thursday afternoon before a terminal brake problem sidelined the No. 10 racecar for the rest of the day. Angelelli was able to drive the entire 30-minute practice session earlier Friday, during which he clocked the second-fastest lap to eventual pole winner Jon Fogarty of the Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP team.
The top-five in qualifying for Saturday’s Montreal 200 at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve are:
1. Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing (No. 99 Corvette DP) with Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney (1:33.135 at 104.713 mph).
2. Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (No. 01 BMW Riley) with Memo Rojas and Scott Pruett (1:33.222 at 104.615 mph).
3. Starworks Motorsport (No. 8 Ford Riley) with Alex Tagliani and Ryan Dalziel (1:33.377 at 104.441 mph).
4. SunTrust Racing (No. 10 Corvette DP) with Max Angelelli and Ricky Taylor (1:33.490 at 104.315 mph).
