Event: GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series 250 (Round 7 of 13)
Series: Daytona Prototype division of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series
Location: Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. (4.048-mile, 14-turn road course)
Pole Winner: None, qualifying canceled due to rain (field set by current team point standings)
SunTrust Racing: Sixth
The No. 10 SunTrust Corvette Dallara DP of Wayne Taylor Racing, seeking its third victory in the last five races, will start Saturday’s GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series 250 from the outside of the third row after qualifying Friday at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., was rained out.
Veteran Italian Max Angelelli, who co-drove with 22-year-old Ricky Taylor to back-to-back victories at Homestead-Miami Speedway in April and in May at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, was scheduled to qualify the No. 10 Corvette DP for the fourth time this season. But a passing rain shower managed to wash out today’s scheduled 15-minute qualifying session and prompted series officials to cancel the session and set the starting grid for Sunday’s two-hour race by the current team point standings, per the GRAND-AM rulebook.
“This is very unfortunate,” said Angelelli, who co-drove with Taylor to a third-place finish at Road America last year in the Rolex Series’ first appearance at the track since 2001. “We are definitely better than a sixth-place car. It’s very unlucky that every time we are in a not-so-good championship position, we have to start farther back. We were hoping to find out during qualifying how the car will be tomorrow. We’ve done a lot of changes and are not happy, yet. I guess that got postponed and we will have to get that work done in the warm-up. For qualifying, for a single lap, I was kind of thinking first row. I was pretty confident about that. But, anyway, that will not happen. For the race, this is a good track to pass on. But the problem I can see tomorrow is being behind the Fords, which have been awarded 300 extra RPM beginning this weekend. They’re going to pull a couple of car lengths on every straight, which will keep me from being able to overtake them at the braking points because I will be way too far back to try to attack. We need to lean on the team tomorrow to come up with just the right strategy to counter this and also to find some more straight-line speed.”
The top-five on Saturday’s starting grid per the current team point standings:
1. Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (No. 01 BMW Riley) with Memo Rojas and Scott Pruett.
2. Action Express Racing (No. 5 Corvette DP) with Terry Borcheller and David Donohue.
3. Starworks Motorsport (No. 8 Ford Riley) with Enzo Potollichio and Ryan Dalziel.
4. Spirit of Daytona Racing (No. 90 Corvette DP) with Antonio Garcia and Richard Westbrook.
5. Michael Shank Racing (No. 60 Ford Riley) with John Pew and Oswaldo Negri.
Race time Saturday is noon EDT with live television coverage provided by SPEED. Live radio coverage will be provided by the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius/XM Channel 117 beginning with pre-race activities at 11:45 a.m. Live timing and scoring during all on-track sessions can be found at www.grand-am.com, and on mobile devices at m.grand-am.com/laptrax.
