The No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP for Wayne Taylor Racing (WTR) will start Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix from the pole after TUDOR United SportsCar Championship qualifying Saturday at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario.
Ricky Taylor, who co-drove with his brother Jordan Taylor to a gutsy third-place finish in their TUDOR Championship debut here a year ago, became the series’ first multiple pole winner of 2015 after clocking fast qualifying lap of 1 minute, 9.705 seconds at 126.998 mph on the 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course. It was fastest among 23 car-and-driver combinations that will take the green flag for Sunday’s two-hour, 40-minute race.
“Qualifying has been real competitive this year,” said Ricky Taylor, whose first pole of the season came in the season’s third race on the streets of Long Beach, California en route to a dominating victory there. “I hadn’t heard that there had not been a repeat pole winner so far this season until this weekend. That definitely made me want to be the first one, especially coming off a bad result at Watkins Glen. We wanted to rebound as strongly as we could with all of our Konica Minolta partners here. I think we have 100 people here from Konica Minolta, so we’re really looking forward to a good performance this weekend. I think our car has been really strong all weekend, especially in race trim. We’ll look to be this good in race trim tomorrow. I think the race is going to be interesting. The times have been really close all weekend. I think something told me this is the first Corvette on pole overall. But it is a battle between three or four Corvettes up there that is going to be really close. I think it is going to be tough to overtake without traffic, and almost impossible to overtake without someone making a mistake. When we get into the PC and GT traffic, it is going to be a balance of taking a little risk and creating a little gap, or creating an overtaking opportunity or keeping yourself in the race. It is going to be quite a balance. I think, from my stint, I just need to keep the car clean and give it to Jordan in one piece and then he can go be aggressive against Westbrook and Barbosa.”
The top-five qualifiers for Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix are:
1. Wayne Taylor Racing (No. 10 Corvette DP) with Ricky Taylor and Jordan Taylor (1:09.705 at 126.998 mph)
2. Action Express Racing (No. 5 Corvette DP) with Christian Fittipaldi and Joao Barbosa (1:09.864 at 126.709 mph)
3. Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (No. 01 Ford Riley) with Scott Pruett and Joey Hand (1:10.138 at 126.214 mph)
4. Spirit of Daytona Racing (No. 90 Corvette DP) with Michael Valiante and Richard Westbrook (1:10.399 at 125.746 mph)
5. Action Express Racing (No. 31 Corvette DP) with Eric Curran and Dane Cameron (1:10.508 at 125.552 mph)
