Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti (WTRAndretti) depart Watkins Glen International after another successful Lamborghini Super Trofeo (LST) North America doubleheader. With four entries across PRO, PRO|AM and AM classes, each pairing of drivers came away with at least one trophy from the weekend.
As a new driver pairing in 2024, sweet victory finally came the way of Danny Formal and Ryan Norman. After qualifying on pole for Friday’s Race 1, Formal and Norman were able to maintain their lead through the caution-stricken 50-minute race. Race 1 ended under the yellow flag and Norman brought the No. 1 WTRAndretti LST Huracan to Victory Lane for the first time in the 2024 Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America season. Once Saturday’s Race 2 rolled around, after a majority of the opening half of the race was again under caution, Norman was able to hand the No. 1 over to Formal and gain a position on track moving up into second place. On the hunt once again for victory, Formal was chasing down the PRO leader before a late-race caution ended the fight for the win. With an overall win and a second-place overall podium, Norman and Formal gained valuable points for their championship title.
Returning to the track that marked their co-driver pairing debut in 2023, Nate Stacy and Nick Persing entered the Watkins Glen weekend comfortable and aiming for the best results possible for their championship fight. With a tight track and traffic, the No. 8 WTRAndretti LST Huracan started eighth and it was all focus to the front. An impressive first stint and good pace, Stacy and Persing found themselves in contention for the podium. What looked to be a promising day unfortunately came to an end after having to serve a drive-through penalty, ultimately ending the day in eighth. Race 2 proved a fresh perspective for the No. 8 team as they started third on the PRO|AM grid. With a string of caution laps and few green racing laps, Persing gave the reigns to Stacy in a solid second place in the running order. Stacy was determined to gain on the PRO|AM class leader before the race-ending caution earned the pair a second place PRO|AM result.
In the No. 69 Global Power Components Lamborghini Huracán LST, Glenn McGee and Anthony McIntosh started on pole position after an outstanding performance by McGee in the first qualifying session. The duo continued to show blistering pace in Race 1, running third overall and first in the AM class. However, a penalty brought the team down to third in class at the checkered flag. For the second race, both drivers continued to show incredible pace but were unable to make significant progress through the field due to a lack of green-flag racing after qualifying third. Regardless, the duo kept clean during the hectic race and secured the second third place finish of the weekend.
For the No. 10 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracán LST, Graham Doyle and Ashton Harrison secured their first AM podium as a driver duo in LST after a stellar performance in Race 1 at Watkins Glen International. After qualifying in seventh for the first race, the pair managed to stay out of trouble in a race full of cautions and maneuver their way to an impressive second place finish. For Race 2, Harrison placed the No. 10 car in fourth in the AM class after a competitive qualifying session. Harrison and Doyle were quickly on the pace and running in the podium positions, but changing weather conditions and consistent cautions caused the team to fall back in the order, finishing in sixth in the AM class.
The WTRAndretti Lamborghini Super Trofeo team will see a bit of a “summer break” before returning for Rounds 7 and 8 of the North America Championship at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on August 31 – September 1, 2024.
Ryan Norman, No. 1 WTRAndretti LST (PRO): “We had a great starting position in Race 2. Car was great. Just focused on giving Danny a good clean car. He was pushing hard on the 88 but sadly the cautions stopped us moving forward. Overall, just a fantastic weekend. With a win yesterday and second place today. As a team, just proud of everyone at WTRAndretti. We will be looking forward to the next races and keeping this going.”
Danny Formal, No. 1 WTRAndretti LST(PRO): “It was a good points weekend; a win yesterday and P2 today. Really limited track time this weekend for me with all the cautions. The car was great. The WTRAndretti team did fantastic in the pits. Grateful to be here and we will get it at COTA.”
Nate Stacy, No. 8 WTRAndretti LST (PRO|AM): “A challenging weekend. Not a lot of track time. A lot of yellows and a lot of reds. Nevertheless, we gave it everything we had and had solid results. The WTRAndretti guys did a great job. We move forward with the rest of the season with high hopes.”
Nick Persing, No. 8 WTRAndretti LST (PRO|AM): “All the yellows this weekend made it painful. There wasn’t much we could do. So proud of how I drove and Nate drove. We had solid results this weekend, so I’ll take it. We are in a good position now for the Championship and that is what is important. We are looking good.”
Glenn McGee, No. 69 Global Power Components LST (AM): “This weekend we were really excited for. WTRAndretti put together an amazing car. We came out here and tested and really dialed in the setup that we knew we could win with. Race 1 we proved that. Danny won and our car was third overall before that penalty put us back but still ended up third in class. Race 2 we felt we could put in another performance, and we knew we could get up to the lead in AM certainly. There were just not enough green laps, and it was really difficult to get up there. We had the car to win, just didn’t have enough green laps.”
Anthony McIntosh, No. 69 Global Power Components LST (AM): “We had a great car, great set up. We had come out here and did some testing, so we had pace. We drove great in the first race, but had a pit stop issue but still ended up third. Today, I just don’t know, there were just a handful of laps so there is not much you can do if you are not on pole for the class. Overall, the car was good, just needed more laps to get higher on the podium.”
Graham Doyle, No. 10 DEX Imaging WTRAndretti LST (AM): “Another great weekend working with Ashton at The Glen. The season has been on an upward trajectory and this weekend is no outlier. Scoring our first podium in Race 1 and some good points in Race 2. We are continuing to push ahead and progress race after race.”
Ashton Harrison, No. 10 DEX Imaging WTRAndretti LST (AM): “Finishing up the Watkins Glen weekend with Graham and DEX Imaging. Very successful weekend and Graham and I really moved forward. We did a really great job as teammates this weekend in the AM Class, and I am looking forward to the weekends to come. Graham has made really great strides, and I am really proud of the work he has put in Super Trofeo and GTD. I am excited to watch him and the gang tomorrow during the Six Hour. Looking forward to COTA next. I have had success there and hope to have a win.”
