After an incident on track in today’s race involving the No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2, Danny Formal has been seen, evaluated and released from the medical center at VIRginia International Raceway.
Prior to the incident, Formal had started from seventh, capitalized on the action around him and quickly worked his way up into the lead group in the GTD class. As the leaders came down pit lane, Formal cycled into the lead and led a total of seven laps. Once Formal handed over the reins to co-driver Trent Hindman, the traffic around them proved to be difficult to progress forward on track. With under an hour to go, and under caution, the team pitted for their final pit stop and Formal went back out for the reminder of the race.
Following the incident on track, the Wayne Taylor Racing GTD team are credited with a 13th place finish at VIR.
“Unfortunately, we had a bit of a scary incident with Danny,” said Wayne Taylor, Team Owner. “Luckily, he wasn't hurt. I am just happy that he is OK. We will take a look back at the shop and get ready for Indy.”
The No. 45 DEX Lamborghini GTD team heads to their home event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the six-hour endurance event, TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks, on September 19-21.
Danny Formal, full season co-driver, No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2: “VIR, my favorite racetrack and it paid us dividends in different ways today. Starting P7, I had a good start, working my way up to P3 then eventually taking the lead on my first stint. We were on a bit of a different strategy than some others. We came into the pits and Trent came out in third. We just didn’t have the best of pace in that middle stint. We got hit early in the race and the front of the car took a bit of a hit. I got back in the car and on the second lap of my second stint, we had a big fire in the car at the end of the straight in Turn 14. Luckily, I was able to get out the car with minor burns, but I am OK and in great spirits. I’m super bummed to go out this way after a strong first stint but happy I was able to walk away. I am very thankful for the safety team at IMSA and everyone who took care of me today."
Trent Hindman, full season co-driver, No. 45 DEX Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2: “First and foremost, Danny is okay after a concerning incident and fire in T14. We had incredibly high hopes for this event from our finish at Road America to our speed in practice, optimism and confidence were high. Danny’s first stint staying clean and letting those around us make mistakes was exactly what we needed to do. Unfortunately, we could not capitalize on that progress. My stint was difficult to say the least, and the premature ending to our race was not how we envisioned this going. The DEX WTR guys performed wonderfully as usual, and I know we will rebound from this.”
