As the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Championship begins to wind down, the Wayne Taylor Racing stable will complete their final stateside rounds before heading off to the World Finals in Italy. The 2.439-mile road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway has proven successful for the WTR LST team over the past two years, accumulating six class wins.
After sweeping the weekend at Road America, Danny Formal and Hampus Ericsson are eager to return on track and carry their momentum into Indianapolis. Formal has two LST podium finishes at IMS in LST while this will be the first time Ericsson has driven at the iconic venue. Like three previous events this year, Formal will be driving in both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship as well as Lamborghini Super Trofeo this weekend. With these two events at the only one remaining before the World Finals, Ericsson and Formal are keen to gather championship points (only four points back of the lead) before departing to Europe.
Nick Persing walked away with two top five finishes at Road America last month and his return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will feel familiar after collecting a win and podium in the PRO|AM class. Joining Persing for the doubleheader at IMS, is Giano Taurino, the 2024 PRO Drivers Champion for LST North America. As Persing continues to battle for the championship lead, the addition of Taurino who has also won at IMS previously, will be key to collect crucial points.
With five wins amongst the pair in previous LST competition, it’s simple to say Graham Doyle and Glenn McGee enjoy driving at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Leading the AM Driver Championship standings by 17 points after Road America, the No. 10 AM pairing will be looking to try and lock in their North America Championship title before they head to Italy for the World Finals. Just like Formal, Doyle will also be competing dually this weekend as the endurance co-driver to the No. 45 DEX Lamborghini GTD.
Following a cameo appearance at Road America, Trent Hindman and Jackson Lee will return as the pairing of the No. 69 PRO|AM for the two rounds at Indianapolis. In their first race together at Road America, the two dominated the PRO|AM class for a win. Lee, who is an Indiana native, first competed at IMS in 2024 with LST while this is Hindman’s first time in a LST car at Indianapolis. Hindman too will join his teammates, Formal and Doyle, to pull “double duty” this weekend with IMSA GTD competition.
The Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Super Trofeo action begins with two practice sessions on Thursday, September 18. Friday, September 19, will see the field qualify at 10:20 a.m. ET before preparing to race in the first of the doubleheader at 4 p.m. ET that afternoon. Saturday, September 20, will see the LSTNA field wrap up their time at Indianapolis with the second race at 5:10 p.m. ET. The 50-minute races for Lamborghini Super Trofeo can be streamed on Peacock.
Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Super Trofeo Driver Quotes
Danny Formal, No. 1 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO: “We’re back in Indy for Lamborghini Super Trofeo. An awesome track for these cars, going over 270kmph at the end of the front straight. It’s our home race, with the WTR shop just a few minutes away from the Speedway. Super excited to get back after an awesome weekend in Road America with two wins. That second win at Road America is probably my most memorable win ever in Super Trofeo. The team tested at IMS while we were racing at VIR, and they gave us the car in a great window. We are four points away from the championship lead. We are going to go for those wins so we can take the lead to the World Finals and continue this amazing championship run.”
Hampus Ericsson, No. 1 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO: “Super excited to race in Indianapolis as I’ve been watching my brother Marcus race there multiple times. Also, a home race for the WTR team makes it even more special. We had a great test there and I know our car will be in a good window for the weekend to hopefully continue our strong momentum from Road America. Let’s make a final strong push before heading overseas for the season finale and World Finals in Misano!”
Nick Persing, No. 8 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO: “I’m really looking forward to Indy. It’s always special to race at such an iconic track, especially with it being Wayne Taylor Racing’s home event. I am extremely excited to be teaming up with Giano. He’s an exceptional and decorated driver in this series and I’m confident we can win this weekend with both of us in the car. With the championship coming down to the wire before the World Finals, my focus is on maximizing points and putting ourselves in the best position possible to win. Having the team’s family and friends there just makes it so much more meaningful if we do manage to win.”
Giano Taurino, No. 8 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO: “I received a phone call from Danny Formal this Monday, and he asked me if I was sitting down, I said ‘No, I’m standing up,’ and he said, ‘Well I think you wanna sit down for this.’ I definitely was not expecting that phone call to take place. Now I will be joining forces with Wayne Taylor Racing driving alongside Nick Persing in the next Lamborghini Super Trofeo races at Indianapolis. It is a privilege and honor to race with such a prestigious team. Winning is something the team and I have in common, and I can’t wait to see what we can do together.”
Trent Hindman, No. 69 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO|AM: “First, it’s very nice to be back with Jackson following a successful first outing together at Road America. Being a small part of his first sportscar racing victory was a neat moment for us all at WTR. Championship points aren’t really in the cards for us since we’re running an abbreviated season, so we’ll be back out hunting for more PRO|AM victories this weekend, which I think we certainly can do. It’s the same as the 45 GTD crew, this is an incredibly disciplined and motivated team to begin with, but a true home race always seems to add a bit more spring in everyone’s step. With that said, processes remain the same and we’ll find the podium as long as we all execute well.”
Jackson Lee, No. 69 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo PRO|AM: “I’m really looking forward to heading to IMS. It’s special to me because of the history and significance and because it’s my home track! I’m also excited for my second weekend with Wayne Taylor Racing. Winning at Road America was a great start with the team, and I’m hoping to keep the momentum going. Having Trent Hindman as my teammate again is another big plus, and I think together we can push for strong results. With it being the team’s home track too and the final U.S rounds, there’s extra motivation to perform in front of family, friends, and everyone who supports me and WTR.”
Graham Doyle, No. 10 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo AM: “Indy is always a special weekend, and with it being the final rounds before the World Finals, the focus is on maximizing every point we can for our championship. With it being the home race for Wayne Taylor Racing, we will be extra motivated to push for results at such an iconic venue. With the championship getting into the final stages, Glenn and I are looking to continue to move ahead building on our strong results we have had all season.”
Glenn McGee, No. 10 WTR Lamborghini Super Trofeo AM: "Indianapolis should be a fun one! It always adds a bit more excitement for the drivers and crew to race at our home track, and you can feel the support of the local fans. This track can be tough, as more teams and drivers seem to have good pace around here. This means you have to duke it out more for every position, but in the end WTR always shines through with our preparation, setups, and strategy. For Graham and I, we really want to win this North American Championship on American soil, get that title under our belt, and then focus 100 percent in Italy on becoming the 2025 World Champions for WTR. A great result at Indy gives us a chance to do this, and we will do our best to make that happen."
