Date: July 23, 2011
Event: American Red Cross 250 (Round 9 of 12)
Series: Daytona Prototype division of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series
Location: New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville. (2.5-mile, 14-turn road course)
Pole Winner: Ricky Taylor of SunTrust Racing (1:15.719 at 106.974 mph)
The No. 10 SunTrust Chevrolet Dallara of Wayne Taylor Racing will start Sunday’s GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series American Red Cross 250 from the pole for the fifth race in a row after qualifying Saturday afternoon at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville.
Ricky Taylor, the 21-year-old co-driver to veteran Italian Max Angelelli, earned his fifth consecutive and seventh career Rolex Series pole position with a lap of 1 minute, 15.719 seconds (106.974 mph) around the 2.5-mile, 14-turn road course located about an hour south of Philadelphia. It was fastest among 24 car-and-driver combinations that will take the green flag for Sunday’s two-hour, 45-minute event.
“It’s really cool,” said Taylor, whose five-race pole streak is still two shy of the Rolex Series record set by Jon Fogarty in the No. 99 Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing Chevrolet Riley in 2007. “I think I can’t take very much credit for it in qualifying. The car does most of the work and it’s been really, really quick this year. The engineers have gotten such a handle on the car and we’ve been able to do some special adjustments especially for qualifying and it’s showing that it’s really paying off. Today, we had just enough fuel in the car to do two laps. We did everything just for the pole and it paid off. The SunTrust guys really have their stuff together.”
Spirit of Daytona Racing’s Antonio Garcia made it an all-Chevrolet front row for the seventh consecutive race as the Spaniard clocked a lap of 1:15.769 (106.903 mph) in the No. 90 Chevrolet Coyote. Chevrolets have qualified on the pole for the last eight Rolex Series races.
The top-five in qualifying were the following teams:
1. SunTrust Racing (No. 10 Chevrolet Dallara) with Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli (1:15.719 at 106.974 mph)
2. Spirit of Daytona Racing (No. 90 Chevrolet Coyote) with Antonio Garcia and Paul Edwards (1:15.769 at 106.903 mph)
3. Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing (No. 99 Chevrolet Riley) with Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney (1:15.995 at 106.585 mph)
4. Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (No. 01 BMW Riley) with Memo Rojas and Scott Pruett (1:16.115 at 106.417 mph)
5. Starworks Motorsport (No. 7 Porsche Riley) with Raphael Matos and Ryan Dalziel (1:17.748 at 104.182 mph)
