SunTrust Racing Qualifying Report

Event: Montreal 200 (Round 11 of 12)
Series: Daytona Prototype division of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series
Location: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal (2.709-mile, 15-turn road course)
Pole Winner: Jon Fogarty of Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing (1:31.524 at 106.556 mph)

The No. 10 SunTrust Ford Dallara of Wayne Taylor Racing will start Saturday's GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series Montreal 200 from the inside of the second row after qualifying Friday afternoon at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

Ricky Taylor, co-driver of the SunTrust Racing machine with Italian veteran Max Angelelli, turned a fast lap of 1 minute, 32.123 seconds (105.863 mph) around the 2.709-mile, 15-turn road circuit to take the third spot on the starting grid among 24 car-and-driver combinations entered for Saturday's two-hour race.

"Before qualifying, I was thinking this isn't one of those pole weekends, but after the first few laps, I was thinking, ‘Man, the car is good,'" said the 21-year-old Taylor, who has two poles and five front-row qualifying results in his nine qualifying attempts this season. "So I was pushing, pushing, and I didn't think I got the most out of the car on the one lap where it peaked. That was the lap that you had to get your best lap on, and I just think I didn't get the most out of it on that exact lap. But the SunTrust car is good and I think it'll be even better tomorrow. Remembering from the two other times I've raced here, starting inside or outside going into the turn one-two (left-right) combination can work both ways. If you have a nice guy on the inside, he's going to give you room on the outside and you might be able to pass him. But at this level, nobody's a nice guy, so the inside's always the best and we're on the inside, so it's basically a safe place to start."

Jon Fogarty won the pole today for the second time this season in the No. 99 Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing Chevrolet Riley, extending his all-time series pole record to 16. The championship-leading No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates BMW Riley, with Memo Rojas at the controls, qualified second. The SunTrust team is in second place in the championship heading into Saturday's race, trailing the No. 01 team by 30 points, and it leads the third-place No. 99 team by 11 markers.

"I know Ricky wanted the pole badly - we all did," said team owner Wayne Taylor, who has seen the SunTrust car win both the 2007 and 2009 editions of the Montreal 200. "Starting third is not bad. I personally have believed this is not a good track for us. We won last year after starting fifth, but we won on strategy in the rain. The 99 car last year was really strong, too. If it wasn't for the strategy, the race might have played out differently. But, starting third will work for us tomorrow. We've almost always been on the first or second row this year, so we've been very consistent."

The top-five in qualifying were the following teams:

1. Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing (No. 99 Chevrolet Riley) with Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney (1:31.524 at 106.556 mph)

2. Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (No. 01 BMW Riley) with Memo Rojas and Scott Pruett (1:31.839 at 106.190 mph)

3. SunTrust Racing (No. 10 Ford Dallara) with Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli (1:32.123 at 105.863 mph)

4. AIM Autosport (No. 61 Ford Riley) with Mark Wilkins and Burt Frisselle (1:32.224 at 105.747 mph)

5. Spirit of Daytona Racing (No. 90 Porsche Coyote) with Buddy Rice and Antonio Garcia (1:33.294 at 104.534 mph)
